Hanimaadhoo

My trip was a cool experience for me :D …as this is my first time to this region…the life style and the culture of living of these people are very different from us people from male...my trip was fun as I was doing all sorts of stuff I couldn’t do in male…c new things..like traditional handicraft being made and then the hard work and the poor standards of living in the atolls…under the last regime the atolls have got both advantages and disadvantages…but I like to talk about a very bad disadvantage that is the soil erosion caused by the badly built jetties ….I like to say that it caused a lot of unspoiled beauty to be ruined… to be broken in to pieces..No wonder the opponent and new president won majority from this island..The positive side of the effects of the last government was only one...as a bunch of houses without furniture has been made for the tsunami victims…but even half of them are half done…lot of them are…in this island there are a couple of islands people living … like the original 12000 people of Hanimaadhoo and the rest of the 4000 people are from Hondaidhoo and some other island…I will add some pictures of this trip and leave it to you to judge the situation of this island…the northern side of this island is owned by the us people…as the airport is there and also an American meteorological center is there. The word out is that the Hanimaadhoo airport is going to be one of the new international airports of the Maldives...Along with the international airport of male...Hulhule and Addu international airport..This island is a peace loving island...the nice people of this island is prospering…in one of the opportunities I got to snorkel and then I saw lots of cool and common fish like the blue surgeon fish and the moray eel and the lion fish and also the conger eel..as I was saying the jetty was built has diverted the current to the other parts of the beach and has caused deadly erosions causing trees to fall in to the sea…as I said this is one of the signs of mismanagement of resources by the Gayoom dictatorship. There was a incident where the was a chartered plane from some foreign country to deliver pizza for Gayoom and his family in his stay here…he charged the people for gifts that other countries gave… like the UNICEF water tanks…where he liked charged the people like $100 for one. The fishing industry of this island is rich as the fish caught is sold at the jetty in the early part of the morning...the fisherman put the caught fish in a alignment of large to small on a wall where buyers come to buy….the remains of the gutted up fish are to be seen on the beach…unpleasant smell coming from it…there are few large fruit bats that are quite large but mainly seen in the deeper green areas not so much on the beach or over houses..The road in this island are sand roads...Which resemble how Male’ the capital of Maldives was in past ages…this adds a rustic edge which give the place its own character...However it also shows the lack of financial spending the former president has applied..They also have a improper sewage treatment which could lead to a problem in the future...as for these days as it is monsoon season there are rain clouds over Hanimaadhoo with lashing rain..And talking about the dictator the former president has built a palace for himself to stay here…isn’t that selfish I mean the people are not having a brilliant time because of the insufficient funds...There are mako and tiger sharks in this island...The island reef are very delicate and they need to be taken proper care of... The locals in this island are very friendly. There is a fun fact I learn that is lion fish attack people when they are pregnant xD… During my trip to Hanimaadhoo I have gotten the opportunity to visit one of the historical places... like the island Utheemu. The Pinnacle Of the island is that it is the birthplace of the three brothers which fought to get our freedom back from the invading Portuguese …which was a successful retaliation :)
.the trip to hanimaadhoo made me realize the true nature of the corruption that was happening in our country by the last dictatorship…and the pooor living condition of the nice people of the island...
